Reporting to the Learning Resource Center Manager, Peer Tutors provide subject matter assistance and assist fellow students with the mastery of concepts or applications. They integrate effective study and learning strategies, thereby maximizing the students' potential to become independent learners and achieve academic success.
Peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge and serve as models for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs of successful learners. Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing text, reviewing test questions, generating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems.
This position requires excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively use technology to enhance tutoring sessions.
Peer Tutors employ a holistic approach to student success, bring passion and enthusiasm to the Tutoring Center, and are collaborative with students, faculty and colleagues. They work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, gender identities, language groups, and abilities.
Courses needed for tutoring: Nursing, Chemistry, Accounting, Mathematics, Writing, and Biology.
Responsibilities
Completion of required New Employee and/or Tutor Training.
Prompt attendance at meetings, workshops and training programs.
Complete tutor training sessions with the Academic Support Coordinator.
Provide one-on-one assistance, appointment based and small group settings in subjects that the tutor has maintained a B or better.
Develop and nurture rapport with peers and faculty.
Visit classrooms, as needed, to introduce students to tutoring services.
Complete and submit all required forms (e.g., time sheets, evaluations, questionnaires distributed at workshops).
Create a welcoming environment and assist faculty/staff, tutors and students.
Maintain a clean, organized work space.
Be punctual, begin all sessions promptly, use time for academic tasks, and focus on the student's needs.
Be courteous and helpful in all interactions including phone and online conversations.
Maintain confidentiality with any shared information.
Adhere to all tutoring policies.
Assist the Learning Resource Center Manager with various projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a current Waubonsee Community College Student.
Good interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people.
Appreciation for, and sensitivity to, cultural differences.
Demonstrate strong clerical and organizational skills.
Must be a good student in academic standing.
Must maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA for Chemistry and Biology or 3.5 GPA for Nursing, throughout the term of your employment.
Basic Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suites. Basic knowledge of Canvas
