Reporting to the Learning Resource Center Manager, Peer Tutors provide subject matter assistance and assist fellow students with the mastery of concepts or applications. They integrate effective study and learning strategies, thereby maximizing the students' potential to become independent learners and achieve academic success.
Peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge and serve as models for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs of successful learners. Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing text, reviewing test questions, generating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems.
This position requires excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively use technology to enhance tutoring sessions.
Peer Tutors employ a holistic approach to student success, bring passion and enthusiasm to the Tutoring Center, and are collaborative with students, faculty and colleagues. They work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, gender identities, language groups, and abilities.
We are currently looking for students for:
Peer Writing Tutor
Pass ENG-101 with at least a B.
Knows MLA and APA style.
Peer Biology Tutor
Pass BIO-250 (Microbiology) with at least a B.
CTE Tutor (10 hours per week)
Passed any of these classes with at least a B:
ACC-101, ACC-202, ACC-203, ACC-221
CAD-100, CAD-102, CAD-118, CAD-120, CAD-131
CIS-110, CIS-115, CIS-122, CIS-123, CIS-125, CIS-130, CIS-150
Proficiency in C++, Python
Responsibilities
Completion of required New Employee and/or Tutor Training.
Provide tutoring assistance in appropriate courses in individual and group sessions.
Provide drop/walk-in, classroom, and/or appointment-based tutoring services either in-person or virtually in a fair and equitable manner.
Maintain scheduled working hours at either physical campus.
Maintain records and data of tutoring sessions, programming information, and other aspects of the Tutoring Center in accordance with Tutoring Center policies and needs.
Assist in the creation, development, and implementation of programming events, such as workshops, presentations, and seminars on specific subject topics as well as general learning strategies.
Assist in the marketing and promotion of the Tutoring Center and other activities and entities within the Academic Support department and division.
Attend all training activities to comply with certification requirements before and during the semesters.
Complete and submit all required forms and documentation, such as time sheets and evaluations in accordance with the established schedule.
Adhere to all Tutoring Center policies, procedures, and processes as detailed both in the Tutoring Center Handbook and by the Learning Resource Center Manager.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a current Waubonsee Community College Student.
Good interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people.
Appreciation for, and sensitivity to, cultural differences.
Demonstrate strong clerical and organizational skills.
Must be a good student in academic standing.
Must maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA
Basic Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suites. Basic knowledge of Canvas
